The Opening Plenary taking place in the Hemicycle of the European Parliament
The Beyond Growth Conference took place in the European Parliament in Brussels. This 3-day hybrid conference was designed as a multi-stakeholder event to discuss and co-create policies for sustainable prosperity in Europe.
At the heart of the discussion was nothing less than a complete systemic shift of our economic model of GDP growth – a complete shift of what we consider success: from a mindset of “more is better” to societal wellbeing, economic resilience and respect for planetary boundaries.
Speakers ranged from the President of the European Commission (Ursula von der Leyen) to Nobel Prize winner (Joseph Stiglitz), and many noteworthy speakers from the field (Kate Raworth, Tim Jackson, Jason Hickel, Sandrine Dixon Declève, Timothée Parrique, Julia Steinberger, Ann Pettifor, just to name a few) as well as young activist leaders (Anuna De Wever Van der Heyden, Agata Meysner, Adélaïde Charlier).
With about 2000 people attending onsite (and 5000 viewers connected to the livestream), there has been a great energy in the room - the hemicycle was buzzing. A great sense of gravity, impatience and hope carried through the event.
How
The Graphic Recording setup comes with a front-row seat
Throughout the plenary panels, I visually captured key messages using my iPad for Graphic Recording. The process was shared in real time, with the iPad screen projected both in the hemicycle, and on the livestream at various moments throughout the session, so that the audience could see the evolving Graphic Recording.
After the session I refined the Graphic Recording images for visual clarity. Later the resulting visual summaries were displayed on screens in the hall to help participants review the rich content of the speeches.
During the closing drinks the Graphic Recording visuals were projected in the space, setting the scene for the final gathering of the event.

Outcomes
⭐️ The graphic recording visuals summarize the important key takeaways and succinctly sum up the information-packed plenary panel discussions.
⭐️ During the Beyond Growth Conference, participants in the European Parliament and on the livestream could experience the Graphic Recordings and benefit from witnessing the visual note-taking process.
⭐️ The visuals were widely shared online and picked up by speakers, audience members and organizations for their blog or social media posts.
⭐️ After the event the Graphic Recordings were integrated in the conference website, providing a lasting record of the themes discussed.
